The 90 seater Elaichi in Belper has been nominated for the Derby Telegraph's Indian restaurant of the Year 2011 competition.
The Elaichi's style is Asian fusion, so it's a particularly good place to go to if you would like something a little out of the ordinary.
It also has a wide range of vegetarian options. They can seat up to 90 people, but it's a very popular venue and can get busy.
One belperpeople.co.uk reviewer Heagite, said of the Elaichi,
"We eat here often, excellent choice for all including vegetarians. Not
your usual run of the mill dishes on the menu. Well worth booking in
advance especially at weekends. Come and give it a try !"
You could try: Balti Mili Juli - Diced spring chicken, meat, prawn and king prawn cooked in a special sauce
Location: You can find the Elaichi opposite Belper Library on the A6.
The Bengal Blues restaurant has been especially popular in Belper because of it's policy of allowing diners to bring in their own beers and wine, which can bring down the cost of the night substantially.
The restaurant has two levels and they specialise in Bangladeshi food.
You could try: Shahi Lamb Tarka - Tender pieces of Lamb Chops, added to stir fry onion mushroom baby carrots & sweet corn.
Location: opposite the Black Swan pub on Belper Market Place.
Established in 1979, The Maharaja claims to be the oldest curry house in Derbyshire. It is certainly well known in Belper with generations of Belper folk having enjoyed their dishes.
It specialies in Tandoori and Karahi dishes. They are currently running an early bird deal Sunday to Thursday 5pm to 9pm buy one meal from the menu and get Pilau Rice or main Naan for free.
You could try: Punjabi Special Balti - Chicken and Lamb
Location: On Market Head, across from Colledges furniture store.
The Grand is Belper's newest and living up to it's name it has a dress policy of casual/smart. One Belperpeople.co.uk reviewer said that The Grand has
"great quality and value indian cuisine, it is a welcome addition to the Belper restaurant scene."
You could try: Special Tandoori Bhoona, Lamb Tikka, Tandoori King Prawn and Chicken (off the bone), in special dry sauce garnished with Egg.
Location: The Grand is where the old Bugsy's building used to be on the corner of New Road and Strutt Street.
Previously the Lord Scarsdale pub but converted into a plush Indian restaurant, Okra is a favourite of Mid-Derbyshire MP Pauline Latham who has nominated it for the Lyca Tiffin Cup where members of parliament vote for their favourite Indian in the constituency.
They also sponsor the local cricket ground.
You could try: Okra tandoori mixed grill: Chicken tikka, shahi
tikka, seekh kebabs and king prawns prepared in a medium, tangy marinade
and barbecued to perfection in the tandoor, served with O-kra special
curry sauce and pillau rice
Location: New Zealand Lane in Duffield, You can either come off the A6 in the town at Wirksworth Road or down Broadway on the B5023
Like the Elaichi, Spice Village specialises in Bangladeshi and fusion cuisine, they have a very modern looking restaurant in the middle of Duffield.
You could try: Lubi Jingha Takari - Large tandoori king prawns cooked with fresh green beans, herbs and spices and a spcieal sauce.
Location: Right in the middle of Duffield at 22 Town Street.
The Viceroy has had a presence in Duffield since 2000 and they also have a branch in Derby.
They have a very plush establishment in Tamworth Street, and specialise in the Desi style of cooking.
Belperpeople.co.uk reviewer Jonnyfive commented on it,
"The Viceroy at Duffield is the best curry outside the city centre, hands down. Its chicken tikka masala is absolutely mouthwatering, and its madras (for the more daring of diners) is up there with one of the hottest things I have ever tasted."
You could try: Chicken Tikka Masala - not a particulary
adventorous dish but one the Viceroy excel in, but if you want something
a with a bit of a kick go for the Achari which is a special tangy
masala.
Location: The Viceroy is on Tamworth Street in Duffield, just off the main A6.
