If you have any interest in Belper you must visit

The Belper North Mills visitors centre is a must visit museum for anyone interested in Belper's and Derbyshire history. I took the guided tour for a bargain price of £3.00 with very knowledgeable guide. I thought I knew Belper very well having worked in the East Mill and having been a long term resident of the town, however the guide gave me a very detailed history of the town and told me things about Belper I never knew and it was a delight to engage with someone who obviously was very passionate about the town. The exhibits are fascinating too and show how Belper was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution and there was a good mix of machinery and items which showed the social history of the town and detail about just how large and important the Belper mill complex was. I wouldn't just suggest the centre to Belper and UK residents, but anyone who has an interest. As a grade 1 listed site it is of huge historical importance as acknowleged by the United Nations World Heritage list. American visitors will be interested in the tale of 'Samuel Slater' (aka the Traitor to Belper residents) who took industrial secrets to Belper's twin town of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, kickstarting the American industrial revolution. Unfortunately the basement was off limits because of the floods a couple of weeks ago, and if you intend to take photographs you should abide by their rules which state no flash photography and photographs should only be for personal use.
