Plan for new leisure facilities in Belper went on public display on the 18th and 19th April at Belper Town Football Club and at the Lion Hotel from 3 to 7pm.

Amber Valley Borough Council have also posted details of the plans on their website  and you can see a slideshow summing up the plans on this site.

The plans for the facility in the centre of town are sure to raise interesting questions, not least being how the facilities will accommodate the extra traffic it will bring in, how car parking in the town will be affected and what the impact on the existing leisure facilities in the town will be.

The plans include a 25m, 6 lane swimming pool, a training pool, a multi-use sports hall, improved pedestrian access, a dance and aerobic studio, 70 station fitness suite and a health suite.

To make a comment on the proposals to the council, you can visit the public displays and you can also view details on the council site  and make a comment to the council here the planning application number is AVA/2011/0170

I bet this is all a scheme to scrap the free parking after 6. If they get away with this, we should have a campaign to make all the council parking (including private council employee car parks) open to the public at the same cost. No more free parking for any council employee, they will pay and display too. We will see how fair they consider parking rates to be when they have to pay daily themselves and also have the struggle to find a parking space. They are supposed to work for us.

Some interesting news from the display.

The number of car parking spaces lost will be approximately 12, the car park will still be council run and they'll be about 183 car parking spaces in total.

No news on whether free overnight parking will be retained though, which was a question a lot of people were asking.
